11 Engagement Gifts for Before the Wedding List Exists

The whole difficulty of an engagement gift is that it arrives before anybody has decided anything.

An engagement present has an awkward job. It arrives before the wedding list exists, before the date is set, often before the couple has decided whether they want a big wedding or a registry office and a pub.

Which means every gift aimed at their future household is a guess, and most of those guesses will be superseded by a list they write themselves in eight months.

First: you do not have to

Worth clearing up, because a lot of people worry about it.

Engagement presents are not obligatory and never have been. A card with something real written in it is a complete and correct response to an engagement.

If you are also going to a wedding and buying from a list, saving the budget for that is entirely sensible and extremely common. Two substantial gifts within a year is not an expectation anybody sensible holds.

Where an engagement gift is given, it is normally smaller than the wedding present and is more about acknowledgement than about equipping anybody.

Buy for the engagement year, not for the marriage

The marriage is covered. There will be a list, it will be specific, and the couple will have thought about it properly. The engagement year is a year of planning, expense, family politics and decisions, and nobody buys anything for it.

  1. A card with something real written in it

Not a placeholder for a proper gift. A few sentences about the two of them, or about the moment you found out, is a complete and correct response to an engagement and is frequently the thing kept out of the whole pile.

  2. Dinner out, booked, for the two of them

The engagement year is often the least romantic period a couple has, because every evening acquires an agenda. A table booked on a date with nothing attached to it is the direct fix.

  3. A night away before the planning starts

Better still if it happens in the first month, while the engagement is still the thing rather than the wedding. Two nights somewhere with no venue viewings in it is a gift with a short window in which to use it.

  4. A bottle, and one evening where the wedding is not discussed

The instruction is the present. Couples describe the planning year as a subject that expands to fill everything, and being handed a formal excuse to leave it alone for an evening is genuinely welcome.

  5. Help, if you have a skill worth having

Photography, cake, flowers, a car, a spare room for relatives, a way with a spreadsheet. Offering a real skill is worth more than anything purchasable, and it is the one gift that gets talked about at the wedding itself.

  6. One named line of the wedding, paid for

Not a vague contribution. The cars, the flowers, the first hour of the bar, the photographer's album. Naming the line is what turns money into a gift, because it becomes a thing at the wedding rather than a number in an account.

  7. A print or a map of the place they met

The story of how two people met is at its most interesting right now and gets told at the engagement party more than at any other point. Anything built around it works at this moment and would be slightly odd at any other.

  8. A good photograph of them as they actually are

Not the posed engagement shoot. A picture of the two of them in normal clothes, in a real place, printed properly. In ten years it will be the one that looks like them rather than the one that looks like an engagement shoot.

  9. A weekend of taking something off their plate

The dog, the children, the move, the decorating that is happening at the same time. Engagements have a habit of coinciding with everything else, and removing one item is worth more than adding a nice one.

  10. An early contribution to the honeymoon

Early is the operative word. Honeymoon funds usually open near the wedding and fill late; a contribution now, when the trip is still being imagined, changes what they let themselves plan.

  11. A game built around how the two of them met

The one subject that belongs to an engagement rather than to a wedding. The place they met as the first level, the first holiday as the second, the two of them painted from ordinary photographs rather than from the posed shoot. It would be slightly odd at any other moment, which is the argument for doing it now.

The one subject that belongs to an engagement

A wedding present is about a marriage. An engagement present is about a story: two people met, in a particular place, in a particular way, and here they are.

That story is at its most interesting right now, and it is the thing that gets told repeatedly at the engagement party and then never again in quite the same way.

Anything built around it works well at this moment and would be slightly odd at any other. A print of the street where they met. A framed map. A photograph of the pub, the beach, the office, the app screenshot if they are the kind of couple who would find that funny.

A commissioned game is a longer-form version of the same idea: the place they met as the first level, the first holiday as the second, the two of them painted from photographs. It is a story rather than a household item, which is exactly right for the stage.

A single-level build at £99 is enough for one place and two people, which for an engagement is usually the right scale. £349 buys a multi-level build if you want the whole story rather than the beginning of it.

One practical note: use photographs of them as they are, not posed engagement shoot pictures. The posed ones produce characters who look like an engagement shoot. The badly lit one from the holiday produces two recognisable people.

What to avoid

Anything for the house. The list is coming.

Anything wedding-themed. The wedding is not the thing being celebrated yet, and a year of wedding-themed objects is a long year.

Anything that implies an opinion about the wedding. Books on how to plan one, suggestions about venues, anything that reads as advice. They are about to receive a great deal of unsolicited advice from other quarters.

Anything for one of them. An engagement gift that is really for the bride is a common miss.

If you are hosting the party

The engagement party itself is usually informal, and the thing that makes it work is that people who do not know each other meet before the wedding.

Anything that gets the two families talking is worth more than anything decorative. That is the same problem a wedding reception has, and some of the same solutions apply, which is covered in wedding entertainment ideas instead of a photo booth.

What this means

A card is enough. Genuinely.

If you give something, give it for this year rather than for the marriage.

And the story of how they met is the only subject that belongs to this occasion. Use it now; it will not be as relevant again.

For the wedding itself, unique wedding gift ideas for the couple who have everything, and for the proposal that preceded it, unique proposal ideas without a big gesture.

◆ Questions

Common questions

Do you have to give an engagement present?+

No. It is not obligatory and plenty of people give nothing, especially if they will also be buying a wedding present. Where one is given it is usually smaller than a wedding gift.

What is a good engagement gift?+

Something for the engagement period itself rather than for the marriage. The wedding list will cover the household; the year of planning is the part nobody buys for.

How much should you spend on an engagement present?+

Less than on the wedding present, and there is no expected figure. For close friends and family a modest, thoughtful gift is the norm.

Should you buy something for the wedding instead?+

If you are attending the wedding, saving the budget for the list is entirely sensible and quite common. An engagement card with a real message costs nothing and covers the moment.

Can you commission something for an engagement?+

Yes. A short piece built around how they met tends to work better at this stage than anything about the wedding, which has not happened yet. Commissions start at £99.
