About the game

Ouse Cruise takes its setting from York’s River Ouse. The Lendal Reach build places a small boat into a river scene with bridges, riverside architecture and details that make the journey recognisably local.

The river is the route through the game. The scenery gives each stretch a sense of place, and the boat provides a moving viewpoint through it. This is a location-led game: the setting is part of the reason to play.

Inside the build

How Ouse Cruise — Lendal Reach was made

The project keeps inventories for scene assets, background artwork and launch models. Those records separate the pieces used to assemble the river from the finished playable build.

The Lendal Reach edition uses Three.js to bring the boat, water and surrounding scene together. The working files include scene templates and a packaged version, allowing the art and game logic to be developed without treating the final HTML file as the only source.

A boat game makes a useful example of how a meaningful place can shape a custom game. The landmarks, route and atmosphere carry that connection, while the interaction comes from navigating through the space.
