About the game

Roof Rider combines an arcade racing game with an unusual cast. Pick a driver and a machine, choose whether the driver sits inside or rides on the roof, then take the combination onto the circuit.

The racing includes boosting, drifting, pickups and throwable items. A garage lets you choose paint and finish, while camera options change the view from the chase shot to the cockpit. The radio carries the soundtrack through the race.

Inside the build

How Roof Rider was made

Roof Rider developed from the earlier Apex Velocity project into a modular Three.js racer. The asset pipeline optimises vehicle models, while the game streams assets and limits the detail of distant scenery to control the cost of rendering the track.

Characters can enter a car or ride on its roof. The project’s notes describe the work on door entry, seated positions and the finish celebration: small transitions that make the driver feel part of the vehicle rather than an object placed beside it.

The browser edition uses the current project files with separately served models, music and video. Keeping those assets outside a single enormous HTML document lets the game request them as needed. Model acknowledgements are retained with the playable build.
